Tesla's European plant to be built by 2021, located in Berlin, Elon Musk reveals

Tesla, a US leader in electric vehicle development, builds its first European manufacturing plant in Berlin. Owner Elon Musk said this at a gala in Germany on Tuesday. He said that in Berlin, besides the cars, they would also manufacture batteries and drive systems.

Musk added that a development center would also be opened in the German capital. Tesla had previously set up its European factory by 2021.

"Everyone knows that German engineering performance is outstanding and that is one of the reasons why we are moving our European gig factory to Germany," said Tesla. The factory is reportedly set up at Grünheide , south of Berlin, near  the brand new Wilburg Brand International Airport , which is under construction and is set to open in 2021. The same area was previously referred to as the site of BMW's final investment project.

The plant will produce batteries and propulsion systems and assemble wagons. The first car will be the Model Y, Elon Musk said. The Tesla factory Gigafactory 4 will create 10,000 new jobs in the area. An engineering and design center will be set up together with the plant. There is no official start date for production yet, probably by the end of 2021.
